What We Do

Holistic Care
& Discipleship

Discipleship is the heartbeat of BTCM, and is done best through authentic relationships.

We rely on the restorative power of relational discipleship to equip and enable our children and staff to thrive in every area of their lives. Our family-based, holistic care is designed to help our children embrace their God-given potential and equip them to transform their communities. We believe the seeds planted through our foundational pillars of care will prepare them to lead their future family with Christ-centered values and a new perspective on life.

Family Restoration

We believe that children should grow up in safe, loving and permament homes. While children who have no safe or capable family are placed in family-style transitional homes to receive focused care, our social workers identify, equip and work to reunify a child with a safe, loving, permanent family. At the same time, we empower and strengthen these families with resources to create a home that the child can safely transition to.

Biblical wisdom and academic evidence show there is nothing more significant to a child than the love of a family. This sense of belonging provides life-long hope, a rooted identity, and greatly improves a child’s development. At BTCM, our first priority is to keep children with family, whether that is biological parents or extended relatives (kinship care). You’ll find that 80% of children in orphanages worldwide have identified families. What often causes this separation in Uganda is financial poverty, leading parents to seek other ways to provide materially for their children. Therefore, BTCM starts with identifying the root cause, or potential threat, of separation in a child’s family.

When a child enters our Family Restoration program, he or she receives an individualized care plan that is child-centered, but family focused. This plan is created to strengthen the family in order to prevent future separation and break cycles of despair. Family Restoration care plans can include financial support, education, mentoring from social workers, career planning and more.

Every facet of care is an opportunity for staff to model the love of Christ as they pour into each child.

Personalized Education

We believe that education serves as the door to a child’s future. We work to ensure that every child under our care has the opportunity to excel and reach their fullest potential through a continuum of education from primary school through to college or vocational training. In addition to Biblical truth and academic excellence, we focus on instilling our children with values, beliefs and Christ-culture to establish a strong foundation for a bright, purpose-filled future.

Due to limited access of quality schooling and high school fees, many children in rural Uganda grow up without adequate education. For those able to afford schooling, most will spend the majority of the year at boarding schools in classes with over 75 children. This drastically impacts the quality of education and the child’s ability to thrive. Many children leave school because families can’t sustain school fees, or they need to earn wages for the family. This continues cycles of despair as children are left without opportunities to flourish as adults.

Located on our campus is Canaan Primary School, a grade school for children ages 4 to 12. This school offers Christ-centered education that equips children mentally, spiritually, and emotionally to provide kids with the freedom to dream and hope for their future.

Through a network of partnerships, our children have the opportunity to continue their education through secondary school, college, or vocational training. This further develops the children’s unique abilities and passions as they prepare to graduate from the program.

Relational Discipleship

The heartbeat of our ministry, this foundational pillar encourages our children to develop an authentic, personal relationship with God and with community. Church involvment, chapels, small groups and youth conferences and related leadership opportunities are woven into their everyday lives to build a solid foundation leading to spiritual maturity, faith in action and in turn, disciplemaking of their own.

Jesus’ final words are captured in Matthew 28, “Go make disciples of all nations.” The discipleship of our children is the heartbeat of BTCM, and is done best through authentic relationships. In many ways, Bless the Children Ministries staff serve as role models for our children, living a life in relationship with Jesus and walking alongside kids so they can do the same. Our prayer is that our kids will pass along the spiritual investment they received to their peers, family, and the community at large. What does discipleship look like?

It looks like staff playing soccer with kids on a Sunday afternoon after church, praying with the children before they go to sleep at night, inviting children to be the hands and feet of Jesus by serving families in the village, reading about Jesus underneath the mango tree, and loving the children when they have a rough day.  Our staff encourage our children with Biblical truth, reading it and explaining it, both one-on-one and in group settings.

You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.

2 Timothy 2:1-2
